Disney’s Animal Kingdom: Hidden Gems Every Visitor Should Explore
Are you gearing up for a magical vacation at Disney’s Animal Kingdom? Prepare for an adventure like no other! Unlike the other parks at Walt Disney World, Animal Kingdom isn't just about thrilling rides—it's a place where you can connect with nature and get up close to incredible animals.
Some folks think Animal Kingdom is just a half-day park, but we're here to tell you otherwise. There's a whole world of hidden gems waiting to be discovered, and we're going to guide you through them. So, grab your safari hat and get ready to explore!
The Oasis: A Gateway to Adventure
As you enter Animal Kingdom, you'll find yourself in an area called The Oasis. Many visitors rush through this part, eager to get to the main attractions, but they're missing out! The Oasis is not just a passageway—it's an adventure in itself.
Take your time strolling through The Oasis, and you'll encounter fascinating animal exhibits along the way. Keep your eyes peeled for DiVine, a captivating character who blends seamlessly into the foliage. And don't be surprised if you bump into Pocahontas or other characters during your journey.
Tree of Life Garden
The Tree of Life stands tall as the symbol of Animal Kingdom, but there's more to it than meets the eye. While most visitors snap a quick photo and move on, the Tree of Life Garden invites you to explore its hidden treasures.
Venture onto the winding trails that encircle the tree, and you'll discover intricate animal carvings scattered throughout. But that's not all—real animals also call this garden home. Keep your camera ready for unexpected encounters with the park's wildlife as you meander along the pathways
There are multiple entry points, so don’t be afraid to explore and try out a new trail. Our favorite spot to enter these trails, is directly across from Creature Comforts. This little area offers not only great views of the Tree of Life, but it also is usually less busy and makes for some really great pictures.
Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail
After your exhilarating journey on the Kilimanjaro Safaris ride, make your way to the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. This self-guided walking tour takes you through lush habitats inhabited by gorillas, hippos, birds, and other African wildlife.
Friendly cast members stationed along the trail are eager to share their knowledge about the animals and their habitats. Take your time observing these magnificent creatures in their natural environment—you might even catch a glimpse of Gino and his family if you're lucky!
We recommend trying to do this trail in the late morning. The animals are more active in the morning and they tend to start napping as the afternoon rolls with higher temperatures. This trail usually opens slightly after park opening and it will close before the park does. Make sure to check the times for the day you are visiting on the app.
Rafiki’s Planet Watch
Hop aboard the Wildlife Express Train and embark on a scenic journey to Rafiki's Planet Watch, a dedicated conservation area within Animal Kingdom. As you ride through the park, you'll catch glimpses of backstage animal enclosures, offering a behind-the-scenes look at animal care and conservation efforts.
Conservation Station
At Conservation Station, you'll encounter a variety of animal exhibits, including reptiles and amphibians. Witness veterinary procedures firsthand through the glass viewing windows and engage with knowledgeable cast members who are passionate about animal conservation.
Animation Experience
Also, located in Conservation Station, is the Animation Experience. For decades, Disney animators have used real animals as their inspiration for the animal characters that they bring to life, so what better place to celebrate this. During the animation experience, a disney animator will teach you step by step how to draw a Disney animal character. Each class takes approximately 20 minutes and there are only a certain number of seats, so make sure you arrive in plenty of time if you’d like to participate in this activity.
Affection Section
Outside of conservation station, you will find the affection section. This is a petting zoo where you can find a mixture of domesticated animals including goats. This is a great opportunity to get some hands on time with some animals, and their fabulous keepers are standing by if you have any questions about them.
Keep in mind that Rafiki’s Planet Watch is not open for the whole day. The last train will leave Harambe Station in Africa at 4:30pm.
Maharajah Jungle Trail
Tucked away in the heart of Asia lies the Maharajah Jungle Trail, a hidden oasis teeming with wildlife from Southeast Asia. Follow the winding paths past lush vegetation and impeccable details as you encounter tigers, Komodo dragons, and exotic birds.
Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of the jungle as you interact with knowledgeable cast members who share fascinating facts about the animals and their habitats. Whether you're marveling at the majestic tigers or admiring the intricate details of the trail's design, the Maharajah Jungle Trail promises an unforgettable adventure.
